Saturday = windy but flat and overcast so we did some touristy stuff instead of sailing.

Sunday = wavey but very marginal wind and crap cloudy rainy weather. Grrrr.

Monday...

The holy trinity at last. Glorious sunshine, proper windy and BIG swell. 10ft+ @16secs was being reported by the local swell buoys. This would mean waves all along the north shore today so we could have sailed a more benign beach if we wished but nah it's the end of the oddessy time to go for glory. So...Ho'okipa. Wow. Logo-mast for the morning session then mast+ after lunch. It looked like scary stuff on arrival but conditions were actually really good at the start of the day. Scored loads of solid turns on a fair few logo+ whoppers and was feeling confident in the big swell. The waves today were great - long and clean - but got ridiculously big as the day progressed. Real manic crazy stuff later on with several "wow! no sh*t arrrgghhh" moments. The main problem though was not the wave size but the crowds. Just too busy. Trying to go for your turns on a mast+ beast is a risky procedure at the best of times but when there are 3 other gloryhunters lined up alongside you - forget it. So the afternoon session was too big and busy to be enjoyable but nevertheless it was still just amazing to be out in such huge conditions at the world's most famous windsurfing beach with all the pros for company plus the photo-shoot helicopter buzzing overhead.

After a few hours of adrenaline-charged Ho'okipa craziness Hylton and I decided to end the day with a more relaxed session at Kanaha. Good decision. Kanaha delivered. Oodles and oodles of super clean perfectly peeling half-masters being carressed by a still solid 4.5 breeze. Multiple bottom-turn-tastic. Cracking session from 5 until dusk with the stunning backdrop of the the slopes of the Haleakala volcano being bathed in liquid gold by the setting sun.

Days like this define windsurfing. :)
